This is the time of fresh starts and grand plans. Doesn’t it feel good to have a “reset” of sorts, and yet, we all know what so often happens to those resolutions we make. Make this year different by keeping in mind two important pieces that will help keep you on track to success:
1. What is important to you about your resolution? It’s more than just what you want to do, it’s about who you want to be. Sometimes we resolve to do something without thinking about what it is we really desire, and when we don’t know our true desire and whether our resolution will help us achieve our true desire, it’s hard to stay on track, and it’s hard to measure our success. Step I: Think about who you want to be and design your resolution around achieving that state of being.
2. How will you be accountable? We all need an accountability plan. For some, being accountable to themselves is enough. Others need a bit of help. When you are designing your resolution, don’t forget to think about how you will be accountable. Step II: Think about your resources and the people around you and how they can help to keep you on track to achieving your goals.
These steps apply to every goal, not just New Year’s resolutions. They are two key areas of focus in coaching and necessary elements for success. Give it a try!
